World Famous Caribbean Brownies

"World Famous" Caribbean Brownies! These are VEGAN, GLUTEN FREE, OIL FRE, and refined SUGAR FREE, and only around 100 calories each! Unbelievably delicious!

Congratulations! Your life just got better!

I deem these brownies “World Famous” because they are TOTALLY famous in my world. Hopefully soon to be famous in yours too!

I would love to tell you that while I was vacationing in the caribbean I suddenly was inspired to create these brownies, but that would be a lie.  Actually, I was inspired while sitting in my kitchen having a stare down with my last lonely papaya.  Papaya and I were having a moment. Then it hit me! You! – Papaya! – You are going in a brownie, and you shall make that brownie deliciously moist without adding fat! Woohoo! I threw in black beans for plant based protein and density, and dates for that caramel sweetness.  Since black beans and papaya are dominant in caribbean cuisine, I thought this be a fun name for them!  At that moment, history was made.  My World Famous Caribbean Brownies were born.

Oh, and if you have tried black bean brownies in the past and were underwhelmed…try one more time…these are fabulous!! These are LOW FAT, Refined Sugar Free, Gluten-Free, Oil-Free, Full of Potassium, AND they don’t taste like beans! They taste like chocolate heaven!!

Ingredients (yields 12-15)

3 Bananas (2 for brownie base and 1 banana reserved for chunks)

1, 15 ounce Can Black Beans, unsalted, drained and rinsed (I use Eden’s Organic BPA Free)

10 Medjool Dates, pitted

3 Tablespoons Cocoa Powder, unsweetened (I use Wonderslim Wondercocoa)

1 Small Ripe Sunrise Papaya (about 1 Cup pureed)

1 Tablespoon Pure Vanilla Extract1

1 Cup Gluten-Free Oat Flour

1 Teaspoon Baking Powder

1 Teaspoon Baking Soda

1/4 – 1/2 Cup Walnuts, chopped, unsalted (optional)

Directions

1. Place 2 bananas, black beans, dates, cocoa powder, papaya, and vanilla extract in Vitamix and blend on high until smooth.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the brownie mixture with the walnuts, flour, baking powder and soda.

3. Once the mixture is combined then sliced the third banana and fold into the batter gently.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper or either very lightly mist with spray. Pour batter into pan and cook for 30 minutes uncovered. Let cool before slicing.

**Notes: I actually prefer these brownies the next day once the flavors have melded and intensified! I store mine in the refrigerator, and eat them chilled. That’s just me!! 🙂

  1. World famous these should be!

  2. Yum! What a great combination of flavors! Your brownies look out of this world!

  3. I’ve tried garbanzo bean “blondies” before but haven’t tried black beans. I gotta say, these look AWESOME!

  4. OMG – I love you!!! I have 4 papayas just ready and waiting to be something chocolatey – and no refined sugar…I can’t wait. I’m making these tomorrow. 🙂

    • Hey Tammi! Yay! I think I am actually going to make them again too, hehe! I have one papaya that’s quite ripe, so it will be my excuse to make them 🙂 Let me know what you think! Have a great Sunday.

  5. Made these an even when baking I was a little sceptical. Boy was I wrong! They were so tasty. Just one question…can these treats be frozen for a later date?

    • Hi Brenda! I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed them! (I actually have a perfectly ripe papaya in my kitchen now so I am making these again tomorrow!) I have never frozen these; I am not a big food freezer person…but I don’t see why you couldn’t. I say give it a shot!

  6. Reblogged this on Magic of Heart.

  7. Rene Shaw says:

How long do those drinks last if you make several days ahead? Or are they morning, noon, night type of thing? By the way love
    your photos on instagram

    • Hi Rene! This comment is posted on the brownie recipe, but I am assuming you are speaking of the Spa Waters? I make the Spa Waters at night and drink the next day. I only keep them for 3 days max. Thank you!!

  8. Do the black beans come cooked or raw in cans? I don’t buy canned food haha

  9. These look amazing!! going to make tomorrow. How long will they stay fresh for although not sure they are going to last long in my house anyway Lol.

Love your blog and follow you on insta too!!!! 🙂

    • Hi!! I recommend keeping these in refrigerator, and I don’t keep them longer than 4 days. Although I think they are eaten much sooner than that haha! Enjoy! (Make sure to cool before cutting!)

  10. Ashley youre amazing! Thank you so much for all these recipes and tips! I really wanna try this one, but I was wondering if I could use corn flour instead if oat flour???

    • Hi Anna! Thank You! I actually have only made this recipe with oat and whole wheat, so I am not 100% about corn flour. If you are speaking of corn meal, then I would say no to that. Corn can give it a weird cornbread type taste and that would be really bad in this. I would say try any flour as long as its not corn or coconut. Let me know what you end up using!

  11. OMG these look sooo good! I live in PA, so papayas aren’t really… well…. around. Is there anything i could use to substitute??

  12. I visited your blog to get the recipe for these brownies. I can’t wait to make them. I’ll tag you on IG when I do. Thanks Ashley!

  13. I made these the other day and substituted mango for the papaya and carob powder for the cocoa powder. They turned out pretty good but next time, I think im gonna add a little more carob, a couple more dates, a bit more banana slices in it, and not leave out the nuts, 🙂 Might make them extra yummy! Everyone who I gave them to liked them, except my sister who automatically says anything healthy “tastes like vegetables and is weird”, haha. I love your blog! ^_^

    • Hi Ashley! I like your experimentations! I have had a few others say that they used mango in replacement as well. I agree that if you use carob you will need more of it than cocoa powder. I agree with you…I prefer it with nuts to give it a crunch! Haha your sis is funny! Well good for you for trying a new healthy recipe and sharing it with your friends and family! Thanks so much girlfriend!

  14. Hi Ashley,
Just discovered your site and love the recipes and vibe 🙂 I was wondering how these might turn out without baking powder/soda? Ever tried it? There appears to be a complete absence of any sodium free baking powder here in the uk and really trying to cut out the salt…..
    Much love,
    Mia x

    • Hi Mia! Thank you babe! Hmmm to be completely honest, I don’t think they would work very well without the baking powder/soda. I have not tried it without, but even with them they are still very dense and moist. My blueberry bars are really delicious and they do not have any sodium https://lipstickandberries.wordpress.com/2013/11/10/disappearing-blueberry-bars/ I know they are not chocolate, but you may still enjoy these! I quickly just typed in sodium free baking soda online and found this http://www.ener-g.com/baking-soda.html I have not read the information on this product, but you may like to check it out. It may be something that could be shipped direct. Have a great day! 🙂 XOXO, Ashley.

      • Thank you so much for your swift reply and for the info on the ener-g baking powder. We do get their egg replacer over here so I’m guessing/hoping they’ll be able to order that in to. Tried on the US amazon site and they wouldn’t ship to me:(. On the bright side I have made the blueberry bars and they are delish anyway so don’t miss the brownies!
Also I have taken another (tea) leaf from your book and really getting onto tea. Nice fancy tea with a little strainer and everything! Gotta have some vices I guess… xxx

      • I am so happy you enjoyed the blueberry bars and I am glad you are enjoying tea! Yes, we all need a little something! 🙂 XOXO
